My favorite clean beauty products

Being healthy and feeling good in my body is more than just being mindful of what I eat.  As conscious as I am with what I put in my body, I’m equally as mindful with what I put ON my body.  Trying my hardest to only use products that are free from artificial fragrances, dyes, parabens and other toxins.

It’s taken me a few years to come up with a clean beauty regimen that I really love.  Products that I feel GOOD about using, but that also work and leave my skin and body feeling its best.

I’ve put together a roundup of some of my favorite clean beauty products over the years.  This is by no means a complete comprehensive list of everything I use, just some of my favorites (and none of these products are sponsored).  Everything from the all natural deodorant I’ve just started using, to my home made body scrub that keeps my skin feeling silky soft.

Curating a vanity that’s filled with only clean beauty products is a process, and it takes time.  If you’re interested in cleaning up your skin care routine, start small.  Choose one thing to change.  See if you notice a difference, and then work from there.

I’ve also found that reading labels can be confusing, so I started using the Think Dirty app to help me better understand what products are truly “Clean”.  All of the products I have listed here scored either a “0” or “1” (on a scale of 1-10, with “0-3” meaning the “product does not contain any ingredients which have a documented potential negative health impact.”) on the “Think Dirty” app.  If you’re curios about how some of your beauty products measure up, you can search for them on this app.  Knowing what you’re putting on your body is the first step in taking control of your own personal health and well being.  Knowledge is power.

Below are my current favorite all-natural, clean beauty products.

Primally Pure, Cleansing oil (dry skin, $18)

You’ll notice that I use a lot of Primally Pure products, and for good reason, I love them.  Their products are 100% clean, have beautiful packaging, but most importantly, they work.  This Cleansing Oil has been a life saver this fall keeping my skin looking and feeling hydrated and supple.  It not only can remove a full face of make-up, but it feels so good doing it.  I massage the oil into my skin for a full minute and you can literally see all the oil and make-up melting away.  After using this cleansing oil for almost two months, I can say that my skin has never looked better (well, at least not since having four kids ;)).  I am hooked.

Mad Hippie, Vitamin A serum ($32.99)

Ok so let’s be honest, I’m not a spring chicken any more.  I have four little kids, am turning 40 in a few months, and my skin was showing it.  I definitely needed some help with sun damage, fine lines and age spots.  But at the same time, I have very sensitive skin and don’t like to use anything harsh or irritating.  I love Mad Hippie products because they are safe, gentle, yet efficacious.  This Vitamin A serum gently exfoliates my skin, keeping my skin feeling young and fresh.  Almost like it did when I was in my 30s (almost ;).

DIY hydrating face oil

I started making this face oil about a year ago and I was immediately hooked.  I’ve been a Young Living essential oil user since I was pregnant with Sloan, over five years ago (but I’ll save that story for another post).  Our family uses essential oils for just about everything, but one of my favorites uses is my skin care routine.

Here, I’ve created a mixture of some of my favorite essential oils for skin care (lavender, frankincense, and copaiba) and combined them with jojoba, coconut, and rosehip oil.  I use the oil blend a few times a day, and it instantly hydrates, tones and brightens my skin.  In the warmer months I use it alone as my moisturizer, and in the winter months I use it before I put on my moisturizer.  I also use it throughout the day too whenever my skin is feeling dry or needs a little pick-me-up.

  • 10 drops of frankincense essential oil
  • 10 drops of copaiba essential oils

  • In a small glass dropper add the jojoba, coconut and rose hip oils. Then carefully add in the three essential oils. Stir and add lid.

Weleda, Skin food ($19)

When I was growing up, I can remember being a little girl and watching my grandmother put Vaseline on EVERYTHING.  She would rub it into her hands as hand lotion (she had the softest hands, ever).  You could find a jar of Vaseline in just about every room of her house.  Then as I grew up, I was the same.  I never went to bed without a little Vaseline on my lips and then rubbing it into my hands.

All the while, never really realizing I was actually rubbing petroleum jelly into my hands. Ugh. Not good. I needed a replacement, fast.

Thank goodness for Skin Food.  Skin Food is my “go to” moisturizer for just about everything.  A little dab on my lips, on my cheeks when it’s bitter cold, on my kid’s faces before bed during the winter months, and is the best as hand lotion before going to bed.  It honestly feels like it “feeds” my skin – leaving it feeing beyond hydrated and healthy (and all without any petroleum ;).

Primally Pure, Lip balm, Peppermint ($4)

Best four dollars you’ll ever spend, promise.  This lip balm is literally everything to me.  There’s not much to say about it besides this is my favorite Primally Pure product (and I’m obsessed with so many other products of theirs, so that says a lot).  It truly hydrates my lips and leaves them feeling silky and soft, with just a touch of peppermint.  I’m buying one for everyone in my family this winter because I’m tired of sharing mine 😉

Lavender sugar scrub

I have found that exfoliating my skin regularly has been the one thing that has helped my skin feel healthy, supple and hydrated.  A gentle exfoliation a few times a week lets the rest of my skin care products soak in and do their job.  And making your own “body scrub” could not be easier.  This is just one recipe, but you could taylor this any way you like.  I added in lavender (both dried lavender and lavender essential oil), but you could add citrus fruit, vanilla, or anything you like.  I keep a big jar of this in my shower and use it a few times a week.  It leaves my skin feeling soooo smooth, silky and soft.  Most of the times I don’t need a moisturizer following this scrub because it’s leaves my skin so hydrated.

lavender sugar scrub

Serves: 2 cups
Prep Time :1 minute
Cook Time :1 minute
Total Time :2 minutes

  • 2 cups of demerera sugar but any sugar would work
  • 1 cup of coconut oil or jojoba oil
  • 2 tbsp of dried lavender
  • 15 drop of lavender essential oil

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Mix to combine. Transfer to an airtight container. Use 2-3 x week for soft, hydrated skin.

Primally Pure, Charcoal deodorant ($16)

I’ve tried so many natural deodorants and I have to say this is for sure my favorite.  It has a great light scent, smooth velvety texture, absorbs well into my skin, doesn’t leave a film, and most importantly IT WORKS!  I’ve been using this deodorant for a few months and I love it.  I actually feel like I sweat less, the more I’ve been using it. It feels so great to have found a product that is free from aluminum, fragrances, toxins – and still works!

It may not always seem like it in the moment, but making small choices about what we put on our bodies day in and day out, adds up.  Taking these small steps to remove added toxins to our daily lives will help us to live a healthier (and hopefully happier) life.

What about YOU?  What are some of your favorite all natural, clean, beauty products.  Would love to add more to this list, so share with us below!
